Atmoshperic storage tanks can be built in a number of ways ranging between full fabrication in a dedicated workshop to full onsite fabrication in the tank's intended location. staTharranged with the use ofere are many factors that go to determine the choice between shop built vs site built which we will explain further here.
Size (Diameter and height):
The size of a tank will generally determine whether or not a tank should be built on site or fabricated in a workshop. The size of the tank determines the cost of transporting the tank by road to the site. For tanks below 3m transport can be easily arranged with the use of standard truck/trailer equipment.
For tanks below 4.7m diameter transport using "stick trailers" behind a standard prime mover is necessary in order to keep the overall travelling height below 4.8m.
For tanks above this diameter It is necessary to complete a "route survey" in order to calculate the costs involved of lifting powerlines and to ensure that the route is not impeded by fixed overhead structures.
Distance of site from suitable workshops:
The distance of the site from workshops can also be a factor involved in the decision to build tanks on site. In this situation there is a trade off between labour cost vs the cost of transport of the tank to site. It is worth noting however that tanks of reasonable size (involving escorts) have been transported to sites in all states of Australia from our northern Victorian workshops.
Site labour availability and quality:
In many locations it is either difficult to find suitably skilled labour or contractors to undertake the site works or there are uncommercial industrial relations issues associated with the site. In both instances the effects can be added costs and a deterioration in quality control.
Availability of space:
On sites where space is at a premium the reduction in diameter can be a very useful means of maximising the use of the real estate. In congested areas for example there have been many instances of tall tanks of diameters below 4.7m being constructed where a larger diameter tank may have been originally conceived. Tank heights of 27m are possible to build in our workshops and transported to site.
Process considerations:
In some cases the diameter of the tank is critical to the process that is being undertaken in the tank. Thickeners and clarifiers are an example.
This is a test of the update of the site.
