J. Furphy & Sons is an Australian engineering icon. Established in 1864, it is still family owned (5th generation) and operated from its' base in Shepparton, Victoria. The company is renowned for its historical links to rural Australia and in particular its most famous product - the Furphy Water Cart. Today, the company is much different.

Engineering is the core business and is predominantly responsible for the company's growth and the profile it enjoys today - one of Australia's premier and most unique metal trades companies. Its' client base includes many of industries most reputable multi-national and domestic companies. In recent times the company has received several significant industry awards including the Australian Family Business of the Year 2000 and the Welding Technology Institute of Australia Large Fabricator of the Year 2000.

Furphys supply the food, dairy, wine, brewing, chemical, manufacturing and heavy industries with high quality storage, processing, materials handling and structural equipment. It is ironic that it is still particularly strong in the field of tank and vessel manufacture, only this time in stainless steel and heavy carbon steel plate, not cast iron.

Its business ingenuity is best illustrated by the fact that, although it is essentially a supplier of equipment to major domestic engineering developments, it is also Australia's largest manufacturer and exporter of galvanizing kettles. Typically, these are large and very heavy pieces of process equipment critical to the hot-dip-galvanizing industry. To compete globally requires high levels of industry expertise and specialised project management and production techniques.

The multi-divisional operation also includes the Furphy Galvanizing Group that operate all of Australia's inland galvanizing plants (4), Furphy Laser Cutting, and Furphys Metal Service Centre. All are all successful in their own right, but combine together with the engineering and fabrication division to form a unique one-stop metal trades centre.
